The City CAP college women’s basketball team is poised to make the playoffs after defeating the Diablo Valley College Vikings Feb. 11, 2016.
The Panthers picked up a 67-58 victory to improve their Big 8 Conference record to 8-4, and overall record to 20-7. With two games remaining, the Panthers have positioned themselves for a possible chance at the playoffs.
Coming into the game at the North Gym, the Vikings and the Panthers were tied in the Big 8 with a record of 7-4. Going into the game, City College head coach Julia Allender knew it would be a tough game and expected Diablo Valley to utilize its size advantage.
“They are talented,” Allender said. “DVC is talented. They’re obviously a lot bigger than we are. We made some great adjustment and they just came to play.”
Size wasn’t the only obstacle the Panthers had to overcome in this game. Once again the team was down to six players in uniform. Sophomore guard Aleea Reese was not available for this game. According to Allender, Reese is facing disciplinary actions, and her return to the team is to be determined.
The game started off close with the Vikings using their size advantage to score in the post. To make things worse for City College, freshman guard Jessica Lauderdale received three personal fouls in the first quarter.
Things would start to get a little shaky for the Panthers in the second quarter as the team found itself turning the ball over on multiple possessions. City College would lead by as much as 10 points in the second quarter, thanks to key 3-pointers by sophomore point guard Corina Tacardon. However, turnovers allowed the Vikings to hang around and they cut the Panthers lead to six by the end of the half.

According to Allender, she told the team at halftime that they just need to get into better positions on defense.
“We obviously weren’t getting to where they were scoring from,” Allender said. “We were trying to pressure out on the 3-point line and got spread out too much. We just tried to push everybody back and get our guards to come down, just made some small adjustments.”
The second half was a completely different story. City College came out and put more defensive pressure on the ball handler. The Panthers’ aggressive play was felt on both sides of the ball in the second half as the team also found its groove from beyond the arch. Three-pointers from Tacardon, Lauderdale and sophomore guard Jasmine Bernardo helped balloon the Panthers’ lead to 14 points in the fourth quarter.
The win puts City College even closer to making the playoffs and possibly hosting a game, according to Allender.
“We think and hope we’ll get around an eighth seed, so that would give us a home playoff game,” Allender said. “How we finish in conference is going to be a huge factor.”
The Panthers have two games remaining. Their final game of the regular season is at home against American River College, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
