The greater Sacramento area will play host this October to a Screen Actors Guild feature film titled “Mamaboy.”
Sacramento native Rick Kuebler wrote and produced the film, with Aaron Leong taking the helm as director.
“Mamaboy” is seeking more than 300 extras and will accept applicants up to the day of shooting, according to Leong. To be cast as a student extra in the film’s high school scenes, participants need to be 18 to 25 years old and look like they are of high school age.
Film producers are also actively searching for older adult extras to play the roles of teachers and parents. Filming will run through Oct. 16 in Cameron Park, Placerville, Rocklin and Shingle Springs. Filming for extras will be Oct 4–11.
The film features Hollywood actors Gary Busey and Stephen Tobolowsky, Disney alumni Allie DeBerry and Dylan Riley Snyder and social media star Sean O’Donnell, who plays Kelly Hankins.
Kuebler said his story centers on Kelly, a baseball star at Bloomfield High School. Life takes a turn for the jock when his girlfriend, Lisa Weld, played by DeBerry, becomes pregnant — unbeknownst to her father, Reverend Weld, played by Tobolowsky.
While visiting his uncle, played by Sacramento local J.D. Rudometkin, Kelly has a profound idea. His uncle’s recent experiment involves Adam, a male monkey who was impregnated through an embryo transfer. Kelly decides to become the first human in the experiment, and he learns important life lessons as he struggles to hide his growing belly.
O’Donnell says the selflessness and love that Kelly displays as he tries to resolve high school “trials and tribulations” is what drew him to the role and will make it relatable to teens.
“I loved that my character was going to the ends of the earth for this person that he loves,” O’Donnell says. “You don’t see it that often in teenage roles.”

The 20-year-old actor has amassed over 1 million followers on social media sites like Tumblr and Instagram through his photography, beginning in 2012.
O’Donnell saw his big break into acting when he was cast in a minor role in Angelina Jolie’s 2014 film, “Unbroken.” O’Donnell says he’s nervous but excited about his first leading role in a feature film.
O’Donnell says he has been preparing for his role by researching and analyzing the movements and characteristics of pregnant women.
“I talked to my mother a lot on how that whole process was,” O’Donnell says. “She has an interesting perspective, I definitely think, because I was the one who was causing her discomfort.”
This is Kuebler’s first feature film as writer and producer. He says he wrote the script for the film in 1988 with the idea of putting an ordinary teen in an extraordinary situation.
The story was sold to a studio in Australia — before “Junior,” a 1994 film with a similar plot twist, was released. “Mamaboy” was then shelved. Kuebler says it was only recently that he received the rights to the film again and began putting the pieces together.
“If this becomes a success, it will not be an overnight success,” Kuebler says.
Leong says the rarity of a project like “Mamaboy” coming to Sacramento makes it a great opportunity for the film community to come together and use local talent.
“Sacramento has a lot of talent, and we never get to utilize it in projects like this,” Leong says.
