A shooting took place on campus Thursday afternoon, killing one man and injuring two others. As of 11 p.m., Thursday night, the Sacramento Police Department were still searching for one suspect described as a Pacific Islander male wearing a white shirt and beige cargo shorts. He was last seen fleeing from the scene.
Officers responded to a call of a shooting 3:59 p.m., near the baseball and softball diamonds. One adult victim has been confirmed dead, and two other victims were injured. One of the injured victims was taken to a nearby hospital, and the other received medical attention at the scene. At least one of the victims was a City College student.
The events leading up to the shooting are still unclear. However, according to City College Public Information Officer Rick Brewer, there was a verbal altercation immediately preceding the incident.
After the shooting, the Sacramento Police Department put the campus on lockdown. At 6:30 p.m., Sacramento Police Chief Sam Somers sent out a statement via twitter that the campus was clear and was no longer on lockdown. The suspect, however, is still at large.
In addition to City College, McClatchy High School and three nearby elementary schools were on a “precautionary modified lockdown,” according to Sacramento Unified School District Public Information Officer Gabe Ross. The lockdowns at those schools were lifted after 15 minutes.
In a video taken by a City College student, several people came to help the shooting victim, going as far as attempting to revive the man by giving him CPR.
Once officers arrived on scene, they began searching around the 3800 block of Freeport Boulevard for the suspect, and searching the bushes near the baseball and softball fields for any clues.
Classes were cancelled for the rest of the day at the main campus. However, the school will be open Friday, Sept. 4., and classes will go on as scheduled.
One student, who was inside of a chemistry lab in Lillard Hall when he heard about the shooting, said that there was a bit of confusion from students at the time of the lockdown.
“It was probably around a little before 4 o’ clock, and we didn’t get much information,” said Brandon Widener. “Mostly we were just doing our lab, and another student was brought into the lab. The student was the one that told us something had happened and they were locking it down because there was a shooter on campus.

“That was pretty much how we found out. And maybe 20 minutes later, the Dean poked his head in and told us to turn the lights off. Then people started hearing about it on the news on their phones.”
Some City College students have voiced their concerns that it took upwards to 45 minutes before they received an alert via text or email that a shooting happened on campus.
“One of our students actually called the Sac City Police, and that’s how we got the confirmation that it was actually happening, that we were on lock down and not allowed to leave,” said Alexia Jacobo-Bates. “We got the text after we called.”
Tonight, family and friends of the victim gathered at the Kentucky Fried Chicken across from campus to hold a candle light vigil to remember him.
Admissions and Records supervisor Kim Goff stated on her Facebook, that in response to today’s shooting, she will be holding a “Love-In” at 11 a.m. in the quad.
According to a statement by the Los Rios Police Department, “Chaplains and Counselors will be available at 9:00 am until whatever time needed, tomorrow at the campus Multi Cultural Center” for those who may need someone to talk to.
