City College has a vast variety of students filled with athletic talent and is well-known for having outs
tanding sports programs, which allow students, who share an undoubted passion for sports, the opportunity to use their talent to excel at their sport of choice.
Many students play sports, ranging from football, to basketball, to volleyball and they play for all sorts of reasons, but have you ever wondered how they chose their particular sport?
City College football player Trent Thompson, a kinesiology major, has been playing football since he was 7 years old.
“I just naturally took to it,” says Thompson in response to why he chose football in particular.
Thompson says he also participated in rugby, for which he was featured in the Express last semester at the beginning of the season. He is currently the wide receiver on the Panthers’ football team.
“I like the commodity and family atmosphere you get with football,” says Thompson.

Averette says his passion is for football and that he never expected to be a part of the track team, but once he realized he was actually good at it, he grew a desire for the sport.
“I enjoy the competiveness,” says Averette.
Being a hard worker, Averette says he plans to one day help other upcoming athletes by training or coaching them in the future. He runs the 100-meter race, the 200 and sometimes the 400 and 4×400-meter relay.
Last season, Averette says he qualified for important meets like the NorCal Finals, Mt. Sac Invitational, and the state championships, where he won first place in the 4×400 relay, receiving the All-American title and getting some offers for scholarships at four year colleges.
Whether it’s football, track and field or any other sport, the one thing these athletes seem to share in common is a passion for what they do.
“I’ve only done this sport for two years,” says Averette. “It just lets me know that I can run good times before that day comes to hang up the spikes.”
