As City College’s athletic director for nearly 16 years, Mitch Campbell helped student athletes excel both academically and in their sports.

Now Campbell is in a role that will allow him to take his past experience and serve even more students.

“I’m excited to try to be in a position where I can help a wider range of students succeed,” said Campbell, City College’s new interim vice president of Administrative Services.

Campbell was previously the dean of kinesiology, health, and athletics, as well as the college’s athletic director. Campbell came to City College after working at UC Davis for 10 years.

He started his new position in January. He replaced Stephanie Smith, who had served in the role since August 2021 returned to her supervisor position in Business Services, according to an email announcement sent by City College’s Interim President, Albert Garcia.

“A long-time member and six-year tri-chair of our college’s Budget Committee, Mitch brings experience with both our budget and planning processes,” said Garcia in the email. “Importantly, he is a strong advocate for SCC’s Equity efforts having served as chair of the Instructional Deans’ Equity Subcommittee.”

In Campbell’s new position, he says he hopes to learn all of the operating systems as soon as possible. Administrative Services works with college budgets, the police department in terms of campus safety, and serves members of the executive team and president’s cabinet.

Although the new position has its challenges, dealing with more of the student body and not just the athletes, Campbell says he is already familiar with administrative and student services in his former role as the athletic director and believes his familiarity with the college as a faculty member for so long will be beneficial to the new role.
