The 2011-2012 edition of City College’s award-winning literary journal, Susurrus, will be unveiled on May 5 at a evening release party .
In addition to this year’s journal, the event features the poet Francesca Bell,as well as the art of photographer Daniel Villanueva and visual artist Sierra McGuire, among others.
The unveiling also reveals something relatively new for Susurrus: This year there is an overall theme for the journal. “From Light to Dark” is the theme editor in chief Brittany Bogan chose for the year.
“It wasn’t my decision to pick any one story,” Bogan explained, saying the entire class, which meets over the course of a year, read and discussed each piece as a group to decide what to keep and what to cut. “The theme really helped us decide… [it] picked where to go.”
Faculty adviser and English professor Steve Cirrone said the whole event is part of a decision to “consciously broaden our audience.” The staff structure implemented this year solidified individual roles and created a “backbone structure” to encourage consistency, he said.
“[The release party is] the culmination of a year-long effort,” Cirrone said, while also pointing out that the journal reflects the dedication and hard work of the students who put it all together.

Bogan made a similar observation about this year’s Susurrus.
“There’s a lot of gray in our book, and we like it that way,” said Bogan.
The event also will feature a performance from the band The Resolution. In addition, Chipotle burritos will be given to the first 100 attendees, and coffee from Café Espresso Metro and other refreshments and snacks will be available.
The festivities in the Student Center on campus include a silent auction of art in the adjoining Cultural Awareness Center.
The event is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is free, but donations to Susurrus are accepted.
