Students interested in giving up cigarettes had some extra assistance Nov. 18 when City College Health Services took part in the 35th annual Great American Smokeout, a nationwide anti-smoking campaign advocated by the American Cancer Society.

The goal of the campaign was to encourage smokers to give up smoking for one day. Student Health Services set up a resource table in the Quad and distributed quit-kits that included gum, candy and a stress ball among other items. According to City College registered nurse Jeffery Christian, the county donated 100 quit-kits.

Christian hopes the Great American Smokeout inspired smokers to give up cigarettes entirely. In addition to his work on campus, Christian coaches high school basketball and soccer, and explains that smoking gets in the way of athletic performance.

“My job isn’t to be here to tell people that they can’t smoke,” Christian said. “My role here is nurse, and obviously, a nurse wants people to be healthy.”

Sam Pierson, a business major and volunteer at the resource table in the Quad, acknowledged he had been smoking since he was 13 years old and continued smoking for nine years until he kicked the habit this past May.

“Once you quit, you can’t got back,” Pierson said. “You can’t quit for someone else or because it’s unhealthy. You have to want to.”

Theater major Danny Robles said he’s tried to get his father to quit smoking for the third time.

“He’s always spending money on cigarettes,” Robles said of his father’s addiction. “I told him let me roll up a dollar and light it up for you.”

It is Christian’s goal to help start a student-driven group on campus that will encourage others to become non-smokers.

“…It’s pretty powerful when you have one of your peers reaching out to you and who is there for you every step of the way on your journey to becoming a non-smoker,” Christian said.
