Amidst the sound of splashing liquid, buzzing red and blue neon lights, countless beer-ad bikini models, and the clanking of crystal cups, a classroom full of eager students study frantically.
Only one voice can be heard. Bartending instructor Daniel Minkov is about to call out 14 mixed drinks in rapid-fire succession to six students behind three bars. At the first order, a flurry of motion erupts as drink after drink is slapped onto the bar. In less than seven minutes, all but one student finishes.
For an extended instant there is only silence as Minkov inspects each student’s display. It’s 8:30 on a Tuesday night at the ABC Bartending School in Rancho Cordova, part of the oldest and largest bartending school in the United States.
“Great job everyone,” chuckles Minkov in a tone of approval.
“I like teaching and I like watching my students make progress,” said Minkov. “The idea is to get them to work under pressure and to remember the recipes in a working environment.”
With the economy in bad shape, many people have come to ABC Bartending School for an alternative education.
“I’ve had firemen, realtors, nurses, college students and businessmen enrolling nonstop,” says Lori Kavanagh, director of ABC Bartending School of Rancho Cordova.

At ABC Bartending School students work closely with an experienced staff to earn a certificate of mixology and gain the skills necessary to professionally bartend.
“Students usually make anywhere from $20 to $40 an hour after graduating,” said Kavanagh. “No matter what shape the economy is in, people will always need bartenders.”
At ABC, Students will have access to 10 fully equipped bars with soda guns, blenders, sinks, speed racks filled with bottles, glassware, ice bins and bottles to train with. Unfortunately, the massive wall-to-wall selection of booze that students use is just color-tinted water.
Students are given a compact bartender’s handbook that contains up-to-date drink recipes and serving instructions. Graduates receive a state certificate of mixology, job placement assistance, a letter of recommendation and a free refresher course.
“Everybody is comfortable and the students help each other out,” says Coco Gaiu, 27, as she reviews her drink list. “I had to learn 30 drinks last night. We learn a lot in a short time.”
Instruction is anywhere from 36 to 40 hours in-class and hands-on. ABC offers morning, afternoon, and evening courses Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. Hours can be completed in one or two weeks or on weekends.
According to Kavanagh, classes are starting to fill up quickly as the weather gets better and bars start looking to hire more staff.
