The City College Women’s softball team showed its dominance in its season opener in a double header against Foothill College.

The Panthers won the first game 11-0. Chelsea Talbert was the starting pitcher, throwing seven strikeouts before handing the game over to Jennifer Zoller; who closed the game with an additional three strikeouts, as the Panthers ran to victory.

The second game was no different. The panthers won by a score of 13-0.  This game was started by sophomore pitcher Brittany Schwieger and completed by Jessie Kitchen.

“We’re very focused. We say ‘Game Time’, it sets the mode of what’s going on,” City College catcher Jamie Lowery said, referring to how they prepare mentally to take the field.

The goal for the softball team is to still be playing at the end of May.  This would mean another conference championship but more importantly another shot at a state championship.

“We know the feeling,” Lowery said. “We want the freshman to feel it too,” referring to the feeling of advancing into the postseason.

Coach Maglione has been the head coach of this well-accomplished program for 15 years.  While Maglione has been successful in recruiting high quality players, he has also been very fortunate to have good players fall on his lap.

He has a veteran squad with at least two ladies that were recruited out of his program but have returned.  “I make sure if a kid leaves that they can always come back,” said Maglione.

“He’s not only softball coach but teaches a lot about life”, said Lowery.  “He’s more like a mentor than a coach.”
