The City College women’s track and field team traveled to UC Davis March 10 for the Aggie Open to compete against other community colleges and universities.
Before helping her team to a second place finish in the 4×400 meter relay, Daryia Greene set a personal record in the 800-meter. She finished in 2 minutes, 22.64 seconds, which gave her a sixth place finish.
“It was amazing,” Greene said. “I’ve never felt like that before. It was like all the adrenaline just controlling me.”
Greene said she had to shake off the early nerves of performing against Division I athletes and went into the race with one mindset: to set a new personal record, and she did just that.
“I wasn’t surprised,” City College head coach Marisa Avendano said of Greene’s performance. “I knew it was coming. She’s been looking so good in practice, and her form has just been transforming week after week.”
Avendano also praised Greene for not being content and looking for new ways to improve. “I definitely think there’s a school record for her at some point in the future.”
Directathletics.com has Greene ranked second in Northern California and seventh in the entire state in the 800.
“It is extremely motivating,” said Greene of her new rankings. “I’m curious to see where this season takes me since it’s still early. I’ve never done things close to what I’m doing now, so knowing my placement in NorCal and in state baffles me.”

Greene closed out the day along with Lauren Smith, Kiara Flenoid, and Chidinma Nwokocha in the 4×400. The relay team took second place, finishing at 4:06.07. The team also took second in the 4×100 relay earlier in the day at 49.72.
“I thought it was a great learning experience overall,” Avendano said. “Some of the athletes are starting to find some of the things they need to do in order to grow and get to the next level.”
Sianna Willis went into the meet and put on a mirrored performance from the 2017 Aggie Open. She ran the 100-meter and finished seventh place at 12.64, the exact time she ran the year prior. The similarity didn’t just end there for the the sophomore. When it was time for the 200, she took ninth place and was one-tenth of a second faster than last year, finishing this year at 26.30.
Riley Cannon and Janessa Moses both took Top 10 finishes in the shot put. Moses took third place with the distance of 11.52 meters, and Cannon took sixth in the event at 10.93. Cannon also went on to take sixth place in the discus throw (36.06) and 10th in the hammer throw at 35.35.
Cannon described competing in three field events as “tricky,” simply because there’s a different technique for all of them.
“I felt really great about the hammer and discus, but I’m not very happy about the shot,” she said. ‘I know I’ll be where I want to be soon, so I can still walk away from the meet feeling confident about how I competed.”
Sophomore runner Jasmine Loyola made her season debut March 2 at the Kim Duyst Invitational at CSU Stanislaus. After running three races at that meet, she only did the 5000-meter run at the Aggie Open and took 10th place with the time of 19:41.
The City College women will make the short trip to Sacramento State March 16–17 to compete in the Hornet Invitational.
