City College students facing emergencies can seek out the Los Rios Student Emergency Fund, a grant created to help students get back on their feet when crisis strikes.
The emergency fund has helped 245 students since 2009, according to the district’s website. One of those recipients is City College alumna Tamara Knox.
“I was actually homeless for three or four weeks,” said Knox, who is now an instructional assistant in the photography lab on campus. “I was a single mother, and I had this little child, and so I was just trying to make it work, and I didn’t want to drop school at all because I was so close.
“I was trying to get the money to get into a place, and that’s what I used the funds for.”
The fund, which is administered by the district and exists through donations to the Los Rios Foundation, helps prevent disruption to students’ educations, providing them a financial solution to a variety of unexpected emergencies.

Students may find themselves facing difficult times and in need of help. They may have experienced an unexpected death in the family and find themselves with a sudden need to travel. They may face a safety need, such as the need to change a lock or replace personal property lost, due to fire, natural disaster or theft, according to the fund’s policy statement.
So far, $165,156 has been given to Los Rios students in need, according to the district. Funds are available to any student in good academic standing, currently enrolled in at least six units and whose expenses meet the emergency fund criteria.
City College students in need of the fund should visit the CalWORKS office in Temp building 1, Room 3. At that location, they can fill out and submit a brief application. Students will usually be notified within five business days if they qualify for a grant.
According to Ramona Cobian, the CalWORKs supervisor who oversees the fund, many students learn about the grant through helpful campus resources.
“The faculty and staff at Sacramento City College are on notice to tell students in need about the emergency fund,” said Cobian.
The emergency fund is an option that allows City College students to handle those sudden expenses that can otherwise disrupt a student’s entire life.
“I think it’s a blessing for students,” said Knox. “You don’t really know what someone is going through and it’s just helpful to have a resource like that.”
