Cold, wet, windy weather provided the perfect backdrop for two local community colleges looking to renew their longtime rivalry. The City College baseball team welcomed crosstown and Big 8 Conference rival Cosumnes River College to Union Stadium one last time before conference play starts.
The City College Panthers were able to edge out a close 5-4 victory over the Cosumnes River College Hawks March 8, on a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth inning. So far this season the Panthers have managed to find themselves in several close games, according to City College baseball head coach Derek Sullivan.
“I think every win this season but one we’ve had a save situation, which means every game is close,” said Sullivan.
The game got off to a slow start. Neither team was able to capitalize on the other’s mistakes to capture momentum. In the second inning the Panthers loaded the bases, then took a 1-0 lead after a walk by second baseman Anthony Fellman. Unfortunately, that’s all the offense City College would muster in the inning. It’s a theme Sullivan wasn’t happy with.
“I thought offensively we should’ve brought more to the table,” said Sullivan.
The action really picked up in the top of the third inning as the Hawks managed to plate home two runs and take a 2-1 lead. However, in the bottom half of the inning the Panthers answered back with two runs of their own. For a majority of the game both two teams switched leads like two prize fighters standing toe-to-toe in a heated exchange of blows.

The Panthers and Hawks were tied at four after seven innings, and in the eighth inning Sullivan made some changes to his lineup. He substituted sophomore infielder Jorge Perez-Bonilla for second baseman Anthony Fellman, a move that paid-off substantially for City College later in the game.
In the ninth, Cosumnes River College failed to break the 4-4 tie, setting up a drama-filled bottom half inning. City College managed to get runners on first and on second. Then up to the plate walked none other than the eighth inning sub, Perez-Bonilla. With the game on the line and down no balls and two strikes, he belted a letter-high pitch over the head of the Hawks’ left fielder, scoring Jake Oliver all the way from second and giving the Panthers a 5-4 victory. Team members rushed from the dugout to meet Perez-Bonilla to celebrate the team’s win.
The Panthers never-say-quit attitude is their driving force this season, according to Sullivan.
“Our strength is our competitiveness — pure and simple,” said Sullivan. “Our guys just want to win, and they’re really willing to do whatever it takes to win.”
The Panthers started Big 8 Conference play at home March 9, against Sierra College.
