Formal murder charges were filed Dec. 31 in court against murder suspects Charlie Hola and Tevita Kaihea for the Sept. 3 death of City College student Roman P. Gonzalez. The charges were expanded with a special enhancement to suggest that Hola and Kaihea carried out the shooting as members of the Tongan Crips street gang. Sacramento Superior Court Judge Gary Ransom read a document in court Dec. 31, stating that the City College shooting death was the end of a crime spree Hola and Kaihea initiated hours before the campus crime. According to prosecutors, the misconduct began with the theft of a minivan at a Regional Transit light rail station, and led to Kaihea allegedly shooting a man on Cottonfield Way. Both suspects robbed the Church’s Chicken on Florin Road at gunpoint, and ended at City College, with Kaihea fatally shooting Gonzalez, according to prosecutors. According to the court complaint, Hola also shot at Gonzalez and injured Ridgeway. Hola’s defense attorney, Alexander Asterlin, claimed in court that Hola was attacked first and acted in self-defense. Both Hola and Kaihea remain in the Sacramento County Jail without bail and are scheduled to return to court on Jan. 6.
