City College recently announced its designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution Sept. 15, a decision that affects at least 29 percent of students on campus who claim Hispanic/Latino background.

It was a particularly appropriate day to proclaim the honor, as it marked the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, which spanned from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Less than two weeks after the ceremony, the Department of Education announced several new awards totaling over $51 million to 96 different Hispanic Serving Institutions. City College is listed to receive $525,000 for an Individual Development grant.

“Through this recognition and funding as part of the Developing Hispanic Serving Institution Program, Sacramento City College will continue to invest in first-year students’ success, and will improve educational outcomes and opportunities for entering Hispanic students,” stated Congresswoman Doris Matsui in a press release shortly after the grant was announced.

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, alongside the Department of Education, have decided to recognize colleges as HSI that have a high percentage of Hispanic enrollment, as well as other requirements, to allow them access to large grants. These grants provide support for a variety of academic purposes, including faculty and curriculum development, equipment, tutoring and other student services. As an HSI, City College has already applied for several available grants and is currently awaiting their approval, according to the City College website.

With the award, City College had designed a systematic approach to encourage first-year Hispanic students. The new program will increase course success and completion rates by creating a first-year learning program. An additional objective is to develop more learning opportunities outside the classroom.

“This HSI grant is very significant for Sacramento City College as we continue to expand and enhance our services to students,” said City College President Kathryn Jeffery.
