More than 200 scholarships available to City College students
Scholarship season has returned to City College, and, according to the College Advancement office, students who have acquired 12 or more college units and are currently enrolled in at least six units should apply as soon as possible before the March 6 deadline.
“Students usually find out that there are several scholarships they can apply for,” said Ann Love, public services assistant. “All kinds of students receive scholarships. It isn’t always based on their financial standing or even their GPA.”
College Advancement expects to award more than 200 scholarships this year.
According to Love, scholarships are provided by a wide variety of donors, including private and community-based organizations, as well as local community members and businesses.
“In 2014, we offered 163 scholarships, some of them containing more than one award, totaling $162,676 that was paid to 235 students,” said Love.
According to Love, a lot of students become discouraged before they even look into scholarships because of anxiety involving the application process.

“The questions are not complicated, and they don’t require a lot of information.”
Students can find and apply for scholarships through the City College website by clicking and following the link under Giving and Scholarships, Love said.
Each student application requires two online recommendations, and one must be from a City College instructor or counselor, Love said. Students need to ask their instructors for those recommendations as soon as possible.
On the Giving and Scholarships page of the City College home page volunteers from the Honors and Awards committee are listed who will, by appointment, help students with their scholarship applications, Love said.
The Advancement office is located in Rodda Hall North 222 and is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
