City College women’s basketball dropped its sixth straight game Jan. 23 to Big 8 Conference rival Delta College 51-27, after scoring only 12 points in the second half.

The Panthers defense was stout through the first half as they held Delta — which averages 70 points a game — to only 22 points in the first half. However, City College’s  offense and defense broke down late in the game.

“We knew that if we could hold them around 50 points then we could have a shot, but we didn’t execute,” said City College head coach Julia Allender. “They’re the type of team where they shoot the ball a lot, and it’s not always typically going to go in.”

City College held Delta to 18 of 61 shooting and out-rebounded the Mustangs 38-24. However, the Panthers turned over the ball 42 times and couldn’t get much going on offense.

The Panthers will try to snap their losing streak when they play Sierra College Jan. 27 at home in their first Big 8 Conference matchup of the season.
