Panthers’ baseball remains undefeated at home with a win against the Yuba College 49ers March 6 as starter Zach Smart pitched a gem and hitters continued to swing their bats well.
Smart, making his second start of the season, came into the game with a 1.20 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched. Smart utilized his off-speed pitches early in counts to keep Yuba College hitters guessing and off-balance.
“Zach Smart was outstanding,” said Panthers’ Head Coach Derek Sullivan. “Recruiting him out of Laguna Creek High School, we liked him a lot. He’s shown that he’s gotten better and better since the spring and fall and he’s taking advantage of his opportunities.”
Yuba College would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a fielder’s choice groundout to first base. This would be the only run Smart would give up to the 49ers.
The Panthers’ bats came alive in the fourth inning with four singles in a row.
First baseman Robby Link started with a single to right field. Batting next, Panthers’ designated hitter Eddie Sievers hit a bloop single over the head of the 49er’s second baseman. Link hustled to third base on the play, allowing Sievers to advance to second on the throw. Both Sievers and Link would score on a single by Panthers’ outfielder Tyler Houlihan.
The Panthers would add another run on single up the middle by Austin Spainhour before the inning ended. At the end of the fourth inning, the Panthers led the 49ers 3-1.
Aggressive base running by the Panthers paid off all game. However, caught stealing, the Panthers were picked off in the game as a result. The team also committed four errors in the game.

The 49ers would threaten to score in the sixth but Smart was able to induce a 5-4-3 double play to escape the top half of the sixth. The Panthers would tack on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase their lead to 6-1.
Smart’s evening would be finished after the seventh inning. He left the game with 6 strikeouts, 3 hits, and 1 earned run.
The Panthers scored five more runs in the eighth inning. Three of those runs came by third baseman Jerrod Bravo’s bases-loaded double to center field.
Houlihan and Bravo were the Panthers’ offensive performers of the evening. Houlihan was 3-4 with two RBIs while Bravo went 2-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
“Bravo is a very good player,” said Sullivan. “I won’t say he’s riding a hot streak because he’s been pretty consistent, but he’s swinging the bat very well.”
The 49ers would score a meaningless run in the top of the ninth inning for the Panthers took the game with a final score of 11-2. The win would improve the Panthers’ record to 9-2.
