An overwhelmed City College women’s basketball team was handed its fourth loss in a row Feb. 18 by San Joaquin Delta for a final score of 73-44.
With only two games remaining in the season, the Panthers entered Tuesday’s game in control of its own postseason fate. With a win against the Big 8 leading Mustangs the Panthers would secure a spot in the playoffs.
The Panthers would fail to take advantage however, getting blown out at home in a 29 point loss. Delta College has now won 11 games in a row and has lost only two games since conference play began last month.
The Mustangs’ defense set the tone early with a tight full-court press, forcing turnovers and causing the Panthers to look disorganized offensively.
“(Delta’s defense) was the game,” said City College head coach Devin Engebretsen. “Instead of being aggressive against their press, we were passive.”
A potent Delta squad, who ranks first in the Big 8 in total offense, outmatched the Panthers normally strong defense from the opening. The Panthers allowed a season high 73 points to the Mustangs.
“(Delta) is a viable state championship team,” Engebretsen said of the Mustangs after the game.
Delta’s sophomore forward Nyaa Davis led the Mustangs’ offense with 15 points, 12 of which came in the second half.
Panthers guard Ashlyn Monk was the team’s leading scorer with 11 points. Monk was the only Panther in double-digits scoring. City College was overwhelmed on both ends of the court by the Mustangs.
The Mustangs are ranked first among California community colleges in RPI, the rating system used by the CCCAA to rank teams.
