Student candidates prepare 4-16 for elections

For those of you not paying attention in the Quad on Tuesday April 9 and for those you unable to be in the Quad from noon to 1 p.m.  An introduction of candidates running for next year’s president, vice president and senator for Student Senate and the Club and Events Board were given.

“We’re their advocates at the Capitol,” said Sandeep Singh in a post speech interviewing referring to one of the most serious roles the student senate can play in informing the state government the needs of the student body.

Another student senate member running for trustee is president pro tempore Ricardo Lemus, who has been highly involved in the Student Association Council and has been president of the Puente Club. Lemus said that his years of experience and his ability to give 100 percent in all that he does and get the most out of other people make him the most qualified candidate to be the voice of Los Rios.

Daniel O’Neil a science major states in the voter guide that he is a problem-solving student who is reliable and trustworthy as a student leader. He is seeking the vice presidency.

Finally Michael Viscuso served on the student senate for the last two years as the Sustainability chair; his position that any system that is going to reinvent growth must have a sustainable approach that looks past the basics of recycling and water conservation issues.

In the senators’ race Lincoln Scott a social science major, said that he will serve students with passion and has experience as a student leader and community volunteer. Scott has had regular involvement in both Clubs and Events and as a senator on the SAC.

The Clubs and Events board has member Paul Kuang running for the office of vice president and current board president Taylor Valmores running for Student Trustee. Kuang has served as project leader in the past and believes his role as vice president will be to do “whatever the president is doing I have the responsibility of doing.”

Valmores has served as president in both the Clubs and Events board and in the student senate.  His platform, written out in the voter guide, is for the student trustee position to combat what he sees as an education system under fire in the form of privatization, the  de-prioritized educational system and ignored student voices.

“ The student association contributes to campus life,” said student adviser Kim Beyrer, who stressed that the student association helps give student a voice on a number of committees that effect everyday student life.

“Nobody else can provide the student voice but the student,” said Beyrer
