City College will be hosting National Coming Out Day on Oct. 10 at noon in the Quad, directly in front of the Performing Arts Center.
The event will finish in Rodda North, Room 264, where attendees can hear up-close and intimate stories from students who will be sharing their own coming out experiences.
According to Workability coordinator Derrick Wydick, the event was quite full last year.
“I think that when people see this event up close, it is so moving that they come every year,” Wydick said.
Wydick has attended the past few coming out events, and was incredibly moved by the students’ stories.
“It is amazing to hear the stories from students directly,” said Wydick. “Some are inspiring, and some are horrifying if a parent or friend rejects them.”
According to the Student Associated Council and Wydick, diversity is indeed welcomed and celebrated.
“Having NCO (National Coming Out) Day is a perfect example of celebrating diversity in our college,” Wydick said. “Sac City College supports this event because we have a strong commitment to celebrating the incredible diversity of the students and staff at the college.”
In addition to diversity, Wydick said that the event displays the courage and dedication of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender) community.
“NCO (Day) represents a strong movement of self-determination, as well as a rejection of the prejudice and discrimination towards the queer community,” Wydick said.
