The City College Panthers ended the Hughes dedication event on Friday, Sept. 7, with their first game at the newly refurbished Hughes Stadium, in which the football team faced off against the American River College Beavers in a game that ended in defeat for City College with a score of 38-23 bringing the Panthers season record to 0-2.
“You’ve got to be proud to wear the colors,” said head coach Dannie Walker to the football team.
Students, faculty and family members gathered for the special game. While the stands weren’t filled, approximately 300 people made an appearance to support both the Panthers and Beavers.
Within the first 20 seconds, the Beavers had seven points on the board, after running the ball down the home team’s sideline on the second kickoff. This was preceded by a kick that landed out of bounds on the five-yard line.
Following the first touchdown, the two teams pushed forward for every inch. However, the Beavers found themselves closer to their end zone several times during the first quarter.
With only two minutes and 53 seconds left in the first quarter, the Beavers had scored 13 points, while the Panthers had three points at just over three minutes into the game.
“Mistakes were made,” Walker said as the team and crowd made their way out of the stadium.

From the beginning, the Panthers and Beavers played a game riddled with errors. Numerous penalty flags were thrown for delay of game on the Beavers, personal fouls on the Panthers, and false starts for both teams, to name a few.
Despite their difficulties, the first half of the game was over two hours long, and found the Panthers in the lead with 20 to 19.
Five minutes into the third quarter the Beavers held the lead again, with a score of 22 to 20. The team scored just before a penalty marker was thrown against the Panthers for roughing the passer. When this particular penalty was called, a roaring “Boo,” rang out from the Panthers fans in the crowd.
For a better part of the third and fourth quarter, the Beavers and Panthers fought for every point.
With seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, Beavers Defensive Back Matthew Olson, no. 21, intercepted the ball and ran it to the50-yard line. Following this play, four Panthers team members sat on their sideline bench, each with their heads hanging down.
In the end, the ARC Beavers walked away victorious over the Panthers in their new stadium, and the general feeling of defeat could be felt among everyone in attendance as the stadium cleared out.
