When students come into the Learning Resource Center and see the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center, they may not realize all it has to offer them and that they offer tutoring for math.

Students can go to two different locations on campus when they need tutoring. The Learning Skills and Tutoring
Center is located on the first floor of the library, and the Math Lab is in Rodda South, Room 162.

According to Learning Resource coordinator Virginia Gessford, the knowledgeable student tutors and staff in the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center are there to assist students through workshops, one-on-one tutoring, and drop-in tutorial assistance.

“We tutor a wide range of topics,” said Gessford. “We offer individual and group tutoring services. Most[services] are by appointment. We also have walk-in [services], too, if they wanted to come in to see if a tutor was available.”

The Learning Skills and Tutoring Center also offers College Success workshops geared toward helping City College students succeed in their enrolled courses, such as chemistry, math, biology, psychology, history, English and physics, among others, according to the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center’s website.

According to Math Lab coordinator Cary Martensen, the Math Lab offers a comfortable location where students can work on their homework, prepare for a test and get assistance when they run into trouble.

“They sit down and get their work out and when they have a question, raise their hands,” said Martensen.

The Math Lab offers a comfortable location for students, it also offers copies of textbooks for all math classes taught at City College, Martensen said.

According to Reuben Acosta, in the Learning Skills and Tutoring Center there is a Writing Center where students can get assistance with any writing course or assignment.

“We tutor different types of courses, so long as it has to do with the writing process,” Acosta said. “If you have a writing assignment, you can bring it in for any subject.”

Working with a tutor, City College student Nisha Dutye said, “helps me to understand the material. It clarifies what the teacher has already went over, makes it concrete, and it helps me get better grades when I apply myself.”

According to Dutye, students can walk into either the LSTC or the Math Lab set up an appointment for a more thorough tutoring or choose a tutor they might feel more comfortable with.

“It’s great that the LSTC and Math Lab can be there when we need them,” Dutye said. “I don’t know what I would do without it.”

According to Martensen, for students to take advantage of the Math Lab or the Learning Skills and Tutorial Center, they need to enroll in Human Services 1000 along with the course in which they need tutoring help.

Gessford said many students are unaware that City College offers tutoring and therefore fail to take advantage of it.

“That’s a problem, for some reason. Students don’t know that tutoring is here,” Gessford said. “It’s free; they’ve already paid for it with their student fees.”

The LSTC is open Monday through Thusday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Math Lab is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
