Living on top of the world

"The house is used as a metaphor for personal self," said Women's Empowerment speaker Gerri Scott on Feb. 3 in the Cultural Awareness Center. Tamara Knox | [email protected]

City College counselor Gerri Scott stopped by the Cultural Awareness Center Feb. 3 to encourage women’s empowerment.

Scott’s lecture, “Identifying the Floor That You Live In”, was modified from inspirational speaker Iyanla Vanzant’s book “In the Meantime.”

“The house is used as a metaphor for the personal self,” said Scott to dozens in attendance. “The house has four floors – the basement, first floor, second floor and third floor. The house and various floors as metaphors are symbolic of where we reside in our house or inner self. The goal is to climb the stairs to get to the upper most levels of our inner house [and] to evolve to a higher level of consciousness, love, service, commitment, character and fulfillment.”

This metaphor is an example of how sometimes one may view one’s life as being in the basement, or a low point. Scott explained that being in the second or third floor is the time in your life when life is not too bad, but could possibly be better.

While being at a high point in the third floor Scott emphasized that life does not stay there. She explained further that some days life is good, and then there are times where life will not be easy and drop back down on the first floor, or possibly even the basement.

Scott explained that sometimes people are afraid of change and when things do not work out, they envision it in our minds and they want things to go back to the way they were, which can stop growth.

“The lesson will come back to you, except it will be in a different package,” Scott said.

She went on to explain that sometimes one needs to either hear or experience something over and over again before we really get it. This allows for the information to process what we need to hear or experience.

Scott closed her presentation by encouraging women to just allow any changes to happen and move forward in life so the things in our lives that we want to happen will eventually happen.

“When you are moving in the right direction to improve ourselves, the door will open,” Scott said.
