Behind City College’s South Gym, sounds of running, skidding and balls cracking are heard lingering in the air. On the field the sounds become more determined, disciplined and driven. A rigorous practice is taking place. These are the women of the City College Panthers Softball team.
“We’re 9 and 2 right now—we’re 9 wins and 2 losses,” says Head Coach Robert Maglione.
According to Maglione, the softball team is off to a promising start this season as the defending champions at the open conference Saturday March 13 and 14. However, practices have been difficult due to the heavy and sporadic weather this winter.
“I think we’re on the edge of being a very good team as we traditionally are around here. We have good pitching, [and] very good hitting, ”says Maglione. “My feeling as a coach [is] if we can get some routine going where the rain doesn’t stop us… we’ll get into a good feel and once we get rolling we’ll be fine.”
Pitcher, and cosmetology student Courtney Allen says she is revved up for the season.

“We have a lot of competition out on the field and it’s an exciting game—there’s not
a dull moment,”said Allen.
Second baseman, and psychology major Kim Briggs says that there is a good spirited vibe among the team members.
“There’s a lot of competition amongst the team, [which] makes us that much better. The second string pushes the first string to do better,” said Briggs.
The team expects to go to the state playoffs in May, according to Maglione.
“[We] have 28 young ladies that are all college students that are out here seven days a week working very hard to represent the entire institution properly,” he says. “Traditionally, we’re a championship ball club out here [and] like to represent the institution in that manner.”
