City College’s baseball team played The American River College Beavers for its last non-conference game of the season March 10. The Beavers came into Union Stadium with a record of 6-6 and left with their tails between their legs after a 10-4 Panther victory.
The Union Stadium scoreboard was already glowing by the first inning. The Panthers put up four runs and batted through the line-up with the help of the Beavers defense who committed three errors.
In the second inning, the Beavers put some runners on base with a few infield hits. The Panthers were able to knock the ball down and keep the Beavers from getting the extra base. Still, the Panthers detained the Beavers leaving them scoreless.
A rare thing occurred in the top of the fourth inning. While American River runners on first and third, City College pitcher Alex Sachs faked to third base and then threw to first and picked off American River runner Kelcey Wirick.
“I was amazed,” City College first baseman Patrick Armstrong said. “That play never works, but we practice it all the time.”
