A new exclusive online tutoring service at City College will help students who are stuck on homework problems, but cannot make it to tutoring centers on campus.

Though email tutoring service is open to all students at City College, it is focused especially for three types of students.

“It’s an immediate advantage for a student who’s at home in the evening working on some homework with some difficulty, and for whatever reason, can’t come back to the college’s tutoring center,” said Learning Skills/Tutoring Center coordinator Kakwasi Somandhi.

The new tutoring service is also beneficial to outreach students because it opens a new venue for extensive tutoring not seen at outreach centers. Additionally, distance education students, those who take courses at home, also benefit from the program, as it offers them approachable in-person help, Somandhi said.

Despite the advantages that Internet tutoring may present to some, it is not for all subjects or for students looking for the whole answer.

“The e-tutoring works when the student has a quick question, like trig,” Somadhi said. “It needs to be a content question or process question. Our tutors will show you how to do the problem rather than tell them the answer. If the question is not appropriate they will get a response stating that it’s not appropriate.”

“I’ve walked some students through their chemistry problems and told them what procedure to do,” said instructional assistant Harry Udin. “I don’t actually do the computation for them but I can set the problem up.

“I haven’t tried the online tutoring yet and it sounds good and all but I really don’t think it’s for me,” said City College student Ashley Cervantes. “I prefer to have the tutor face to face and ask them immediately if a new question comes up, rather than wait three hours to get an answer.”

All a student needs to do is type up an email with a question. Within three hours (during regular tutoring center hours), the student will receive a reply explaining the process or help clarify any doubts.
