The new semester is here and while some sports are entering post-season City College’s track and field team gears up for another new season.
As their first meet, scheduled for Feb. 11, creeps closer, athletes gather for daily practices to get ready for the upcoming event.
The team’s daily practices start with athletes pairing up in groups at Hughes Stadium to sprint, jump and hurl javelins.
This season’s the team’s sportsmanship is healthy and diverse, according to track and field Coach Rob Dewar.
“This is the first year we’ve combined the women’s team and the men’s team together,” says Dewar. “All the athletes are working really well together.”
While winter break was a vacation for some students, most of the track and field athletes spent it getting into shape.

According to Dewar, there are more new athletes than returning ones.
“We don’t have that many returners,” Dewar says. “But with our new ones, we’re doing really well.”
Most of the newer athletes came into practice hoping to get better at their specialized areas and improve their skills to surpass their own expectations.
“I want to try to get on the top 10,” says freshman Samantha Esperanza, a new sprinter and hurdler for the team. “I also want to beat my high school time.”
The first event is scheduled for Feb. 11, a six-way men’s and women’s rotational meet with DeAnza College, San Joaquin Delta College and Butte College at Modesto Junior College.
“As long as we stay healthy, we’ll do well.” Dewar says. “If we stay healthy, we’ll qualify for conference, [and] the hard work will pay off.”
