City College students applauded the grand opening Nov. 18 of the first Veterans Resource Center of the Los Rios Community College District.

Veterans and their families were joined by a host of City College faculty to celebrate the new VRC in the Student Center. Visitors enjoyed a barbeque lunch, and entertainment for the children, also attended by faculty members and veterans.

“It was a success,” said Admissions and Records Clerk Jake Kattan. “We wanted to make this a family event and see the families come out. It was great to see all the on-and off-campus services that are offered to our veterans.”

With services provided by Admissions and Records, Disability Resource Center and Counseling Center, the new VRC will assist veterans with their homework, VA benefits and admissions. The new facility will also offer computer and counseling services, as well as provide a place for veterans to meet each other.

Luis Soto, a veteran and City College student, attended the afternoon festivities and looked forward to utilizing the new VRC facility.

Justin Turner, newly appointed ASG president and student-veteran hopes the new VRC is just the start of programs devoted to veterans and their families.

“It’s just nice to actually see that our veteran-students will be appreciated and taken care of,” Turner said.

The VRC is now open in its temporary office location in the Student Center, Room 103. The VRC awaits the completion of the new Student Center, slated to be built by 2014 for their permanent offices according to Dean of Counseling Services David Rasul.
