City College student Justin McAllister dies after football conditioning

Justin McAllister, a 19-year-old City College athlete, died Monday night due to heart failure after collapsing during a routine team practice at Hughes Stadium. According to an article from the Sacramento Bee, the 6-foot-7 Panthers offensive tackle “struggled to regain his breath after a routine 20-minute conditioning session inside Hughes Stadium under the supervision of coaches and trainers.”  The news comes as a tragic shock to his family, fellow teammates and members of the program. As car horns beeped and traffic barged through the surrounding streets, over 20,000 eager fans flooded into City College’s Hughes Stadium to watch Sacramento Republic FC play against Orange County SC on Saturday, Aug. 26.  The televised event was highly celebrated as it had been 10 seasons since Hughes hosted a Republic FC game, being the site of the local team’s first four home matches back in 2014. Daniel H. Bean Jr., who had been incarcerated for 22 years, gives credit to Re-Emerging Scholars and his faith in God for where he is today. Bean was one of four students honored on May 23 at the RES celebration with a certificate of completion and advancement for completing the scholars program at City College. RES, which started in 2016 in the Los Rios Community College District, supports incarcerated, formerly incarcerated and justice-impacted students with re-entry and transition support services.
