Economics professor Greg Rose’s lectures begin promptly with a “Good morning!” to students. They know what to expect: a man who treats every lecture as an adventure. His eyes are focused, his hand gestures are descriptive and exuberant. Each new subject is deliberately planned, with a story and a thorough explanation.
The walls of his office are lined with flags of countries far and wide. The flag of Canada was purchased with his college roommates. Rose was an ice hockey player, and although the national sport of the North American country is lacrosse, he and his friends felt that hockey was a good enough reason to drape the flag in their home.
Rose’s stories, like days spent surfing the waters of Southern California, are lined with personal experiences from his educated life. He has a story for every lecture. More often than not, he has multiple.
When it comes to the teaching styles of professors at City College, there are many. But all it takes is one class session of Rose’s, and you will get hooked. In his lectures on economics, his references range from Barbie to Shakespeare to “Top Gun” and everything in between. Rose’s classes abound with information, a hallmark for the man who lives and breathes economics.
“I had no idea what I was going to major in,” says Rose, as he reflected on taking an economics course earlier in his academic career and why he chose economics as his career. “This guy was a fabulous professor, and I realized that’s what I wanted to do.”
With facts, jokes and numerous stories, now Rose keeps his students excited about the world of economics. In more than 25 years of teaching students from different backgrounds, Rose has become a favorite of many of his pupils.

Rose, 60, was born and raised in San Diego. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Irvine, but attended several other colleges to elevate his knowledge of both economics and social science: the American University in Washington, D.C.; UC San Diego, and most recently UC Davis. He has taught a semester at the American University, three years at both UCD and Sacramento State, and nearly 25 years at City College. Of all the campuses around California, from UCs to CSUs, his home is here with the Panthers.
The professor also helped launch his own business while in San Diego. Rose, along with two partners, helping open Sundance Ski in his hometown, appealing to Southern California’s winter activity enthusiasts. Rose enjoyed years of success, before heading north to pursue his academic future.
Rose has continued his success in business at a consulting firm in downtown Sacramento. The firm’s main client is the State of California’s Department of Healthcare Services, which uses Rose’s knowledge, along with his colleagues’, to make informed decisions on the status of the state’s health system.
Compliments and praise not only come from the student body, but from other instructors as well.
Brian Mom, who has taught in City College’s business program for the last nine years, saw Rose speak at an Academic Senate meeting earlier in the year.
“You can tell he really cares about his subject,” Mom says, attributing Rose’s “wealth of knowledge” as the reason he is such a great asset to the campus.
