Since in-person productions have paused, theater students at City College have been performing remotely via Zoom. One of their most recent productions was “Zoom for the Holidays,” which consisted of streaming 10 short plays that were written locally.
In order to stage these productions, theater students typically go to Broadway Costumes to purchase supplies and costumes, which are necessary for both productions and classes offered at City College.
Broadway Costumes and Theatrical Supply, located on 3945 Franklin Blvd., has supported City College theater students throughout the years. The store is run by third-generation owners Larry Dockter and his wife Deanna, who are celebrating the store’s 55th anniversary.
Broadway Costumes was founded in 1965 by Dockter’s grandmother and was originally located on 31st and Broadway. Shortly after, it moved to Oak Park and then to Los Angeles before its current location on Franklin Boulevard. Despite the pandemic, the shop continues to support City College students.
“At the beginning of some of the classes, students would come in and purchase kits that they would then use throughout the course of their classroom work,” said Dockter.
Luther Hanson, a theater professor at City College said, “I personally don’t know the people at Broadway Costumes very well, but we have, in fact, been buying supplies from them for many years, and we always send our students to them to buy makeup kits.”
Dockter said that the store has worked with City College students during his six years of ownership and throughout the years he helped the previous owners, who were also members of his family.
“Prior to that, it would have been my grandmother, my aunt, my mom or other employees who worked here over the decades,” said Dockter.
Despite the lack of in-person productions, City College students still depend on Broadway Costumes for supplies. Depending on what happens with the pandemic, Broadway Costumes may see more of the City College theater department as it prepares for more productions in the spring.

According to its website, Broadway Costumes specializes in historical costuming, but it also carries a variety of theatrical supplies, including special effects makeup, costumes, eye contacts and wigs.
Sienna Sloane, a City College student who is a dresser for productions in Sacramento, has shopped at Broadway Costumes and said, “My products that I bought for my class were mostly Ben Nye makeup, which is actually really cool because you can’t really get their products at any retail store.”
With the holidays approaching, Broadway Costumes is renting Santa suits, but Dockter said that business is half of what it typically is at this time of year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are struggling very hard to make it through all of this. We have not lost any bills,” said Dockter. “Bills are still the same. We have rent, dry-cleaning bills and supplies. All of that still has to be paid for.”
