UPDATE: The Los Rios Community College Board of Trustees officially approved Albert Garcia as the new president of City College at their April 12 meeting. His initial term is April 13, 2023 to June 30, 2024.
Albert Garcia, the interim president of City College since July 1, 2022 has been selected as the new permanent president, according to an announcement from Los Rios Community College District Chancellor Brian King on Monday.
The selection is pending official confirmation at the April 12 Los Rios Board of Trustees meeting.
“Albert is well known throughout the college, and around our district, for his thoughtful and collaborative nature, for his kindness, his intellect, and for his deep commitment to serving students and to our college and districtwide focus on equity and anti-racism,” King said in his announcement. “Albert is also a published poet, a craft which requires a level of personal introspection that will undoubtedly serve him well as a college president.”
Garcia stepped into the role of interim president when previous president Michael Gutierrez left City College for a position as president of Hartnell Community College in Salinas.
According to King’s announcement, Garcia has been with City College since 1991 when he was first hired as an English professor and then moved his way up to become dean of the college’s language and literature division. Prior to his selection to the interim role, Garcia was the vice president of instruction.
Garcia states that “I have been incredibly fortunate to have served SCC’s students and college community in so many ways over the years. This school gets in your blood. Now I have the honor to serve as president. I feel the opportunity this presents. I feel the obligation. I’m thankful I get to work in this wonderful place with these fantastic people, doing all we can to make our students’ lives better.”
Garcia earned his bachelor’s degree from California State University, Chico, his master’s of fine arts at the University of Montana and his doctorate at Benedictine University.
