After three semesters on The Express, Tony Rodriguez takes over the position of sports editor in the spring 2021 semester.
In fall 2020, Rodriguez served as the co-sports editor in collaboration with former Sports Editor Keyshawn Davis.
“I think this is a great route for me,” Rodriguez said. “It kind of fell into my plate.”
Rodriguez, who has just transferred this semester to Sacramento State University, said he wanted to work on The Express for one more semester.
Compared to his first semester on The Express, which occurred before the nationwide shutdown, Rodriguez admitted that working virtually is “a different dynamic.”
“The good thing about working online is that it’s really easy to connect with people. I’ve already got some interviews I don’t think I would’ve been able to meet with in person,” Rodriguez said. “There are some benefits to it, I think.”

Rodriguez said the writing classes he took in college before joining The Express pushed him to major in journalism. He plans to complete a bachelor’s degree at Sacramento State University and work for The State Hornet, the student-run newspaper.
“For the long term, I think writing for publication or creating my own publication is ideal,” Rodriguez said. “I’m open to a lot of things.”
While it’s hard for Rodriguez to choose a favorite sport, he said he enjoys playing soccer the most, and basketball is his favorite sport to watch.
“My favorite team is the Kings,” said Rodriguez. “Hopefully, I can work for them one day.”
