Panthers takes second in regionals with 11 wrestlers advancing to state
Despite being hampered with injuries earlier in the season, the City College wrestling team has not only managed to win its eighth consecutive Big 8 Conference Championship but also won a school record 17 meets as Head Coach David Pacheco got his 300th career win late in the year.
“It means a few things,” said Pacheco on reaching the milestone. “One, I’ve been coaching for a long time, and two, I have been surrounded by some fantastic assistant coaches.”
Pacheco logged his 300th win Nov. 10 during the Sac City Multi Duals against Skyline College. “I have been lucky to have young men compete for us that valued hard work–goal setting and academics,” he said.
Pacheco received win No. 301 in the team’s last regular season meet against four-year institution Simpson University.
After a second-place finish in the Northern California Regionals at Sierra College Dec. 1, the Panthers will now prepare for the California State Championship–with 11 out of 12 wrestlers
qualifying to compete at Cerritos College Dec. 7-8.

With around 30 seconds remaining, Hall tried for another takedown, but Harmon was able to block it by spinning behind Hall for a takedown of his own. Afterward, Harmon was able to avoid contact (with a tight lead) and received the win as time expired.
Abel Garcia (165) and Brian Horn (197) lost in the finals in what Pacheco described as “hard fought” matches. Pacheco also said Garcia and Horn were looking to turn things around when they compete at state later this week.
Horn, Garcia and Harmon will be joined in the state championships by Conrad Trevino (157), Mikey Mello (141), Dylan Crawford (149), Isaac Bertalotto (174), Steven Abbott (184), Manny Curry (157), Ryan Harlow (133) and Jordan Denny (285). Ryun Ortiz (125) took seventh place in the regionals but will advance as an alternate–only able to perform if another wrestler from his weight class is not able to compete.
Fresno City College won first place in the regionals and scored 238.5 points. City College
followed up by scoring 168.5 with Lassen College rounding out the top three with 109.
“Realistically, Fresno is the team to beat,” said Pacheco on the expectations for the state. “It’s going to be very difficult to catch them–they’re so powerful–but that’s our goal.”
Pacheco also said if the Panthers can’t catch Fresno, he believes it will be a good battle for second place–with it coming down to his team, Cerritos, Mt. San Antonio College and Palomar College.
