City College’s volleyball team was defeated by the Santa Rosa Junior College Mudcats for the regional qualifying championship in a battle, which took place Oct. 25.
Santa Rosa took the lead after winning two sets in a row, with scores of 25-11 and 25-12. The Mudcats followed by winning the third set, 25-20, bringing the game to an end with a final score of 3-0.
“Sac City played hard and Santa Rosa was a tough team,” said Panther fan and City College social science major Ben Brooks. “I think they competed well [and] played hard. I was disappointed that they lost, but it was a tough game.”
During the third set, the Panthers used their strength of team work and executed defensive strategies against the Mudcat’s powerful serves, which proved to be a good offensive strategy.
According to the head coach of the Mudcats, Kelly Wood, it is also a strategy where it is expected for the team to miss their intended target or goal. With the Panther’s No. 1 defensive player, Maddie Berridge, the team was able to block several attacks served by the Mudcat’s No. 1 outside hitter, Olivia Urban.
The Mudcats’ offensive strategy eventually paid off, helping them score their win and making it a quick 3-set game.

We serve really tough, we study our opponent, and we try to figure out what their strengths are and try to take those away from them.”
The Panthers’ head coach, Laurie Nash, stated that her team had faced the Mudcats before, which gave them an advantage in terms of defense strategies. Nash said she wanted to make sure that her team was “serving tough to get them out of the system because the [Mudcats] are a good serving team.”
Berridge did provide a wall of defense against Urban, who continually sent powerful spikes and held up an equally good defensive strategy that was tough to break for the Panthers.
“We struggled a little bit on passing,” said Nash. “That was a tough task consideringSanta Rosa’s block. I felt that we were getting better at the end. Santa Rosais awfully good right now, and [we]’re suffering through some injuries and haven’t had the same line-up, in I don’t know how many matches, and so for us to just put something together and really focus on how we were playing, I think we did an OK job.”
The Panthers are in their second round, in the five conference championships that involve 16 regional qualifying teams. The teams are competing for the championship. Nash said she has faith in her team, who will be facing American River College next week.
“We have a lot of growth between now and at the end of the season, and that’s what we’re just striving [for] everyday, trying to improve,” Nash said.
