My advice for Obama

President Barack Obama’s stimulus package is very similar to the New Deal put forth by Franklin Roosevelt, which is famous for getting us out of the Great Depression.
What isn’t so well known is that the New Deal made the Depression last seven years longer and was part of the cause for the Roosevelt Recession from 1937-38. It looks as if history is repeating itself, and not for the better.
Obama obviously got a raw deal. He’s sworn into office in the middle of a terrible economic state, a war, and off of a campaign that promised hope and change for everyone. It’s a tough job. I believe future problems could be caused by his attempt to deal with all the problems at once by immediately signing into law a $787 billion stimulus package that may or may not actually be stimulating.

A problem cannot be fixed by just throwing a bunch of money at it without thinking it through. The goal of it should have been to create jobs, but that seems to have been a side note. Thirty-five percent of it is going into tax cuts with the hope that people will spend money. Remember how well that worked last time? We just used the money to help pay off our massive debt.
I don’t hate the stimulus package in its entirety. I’m a fan of tax breaks, I love what it’s going to do to help students, and it’s great that he’s trying, but he should not have grouped all of these things together.
He has said that the main focus right now is the economy. That’s all he should be focusing on. He didn’t have to make a massive bill. He should have proposed smaller bills that would address specific issues. One of these bills could have created jobs as quickly as possible to help the deteriorating economy.
The thing that scares me the most is how quickly this whole thing happened. It seemed almost instant that he became president, then signed the gigantic bill. FDR was under the same amount of pressure and did the same thing, not realizing the negative effects it could have in the future. President Obama and his administration should have acted differently.
Time will tell whether this stimulus package is stimulating or not. It has a lot of good packed into it, but a lot of stuff that isn’t necessary at the moment. I don’t believe that it was thought through enough, but, with hard work from the people, we will hopefully see a change.
