It is student government election season on City College campus, and two events were held to get students involved and more informed.
Elections forum were hosted by the City College student candidates April 5-7 on the Quad stage.
Students are running for positions on the Club and Events Board and Student Senate. They used the forums as a way to inform students on why they should be elected and what their qualifications were. Candidates were given the stage to talk for two minutes and were alerted when they had 30 seconds left. After candidates finished speaking, students in the crowd were allowed to ask questions.
Raymond Concha, international studies major, is running uncontested for Student Senate vice president and is currently a student senator in the student council.
“I’ve worked a lot with our current vice president [Ansel Chan]. I’ve felt very inspired by and our president [Marianna Sousa] now,” said Concha. “I want to hopefully make a difference, and I truly care about the student body here.”
Concha hopes to “promote things” students are interested. He said he would like to get the outreach centers more involved with the campus, especially with student government and clubs.

Other uncontested positions for Student Senate include treasurer and Secretary of Technology. Some Student Senate positions feature multiple candidates. Two candidates, Melody Jimenez and Savannah Mendoza, are running for Secretary of Legislative Affairs, while five students are running to be senators. There are up to 20 senator positions available.
On the CAEB side of the elections, positions such as CAEB president and vice president have uncontested candidates, as does CAEB Secretary of Technology. The role of CAEB project coordinator is also uncontested, with up to 10 positions available. Running contested against Neil Sonico for CAEB Secretary of Public Relations is business major Ashley Rowe. Rowe said she wants to use her business acumen if elected.
“I have the business mindset,” said Rowe. “I’m going to do all the planning and whatnot for clubs and events.”
Rowe also hopes to “build the relationship between students and faculty back up.”
There are also positions that can only be filled through appointment, including student body president and treasurer for CAEB.
Election days are April 12-13. Students can vote online from 7 a.m.-11:30 p.m., via eServices. To vote, just sign into an eServices account, click on the “Elections & Surveys” tab, read the voter guide, and proceed to cast a vote.
