City College students who are taking three units or less may have to pay more to use Regional Transit beginning this summer.
Alane Masui, assistant general manager and spokeswoman for Regional Transit, said that a fare change proposal was brought up Jan. 25 at its board meeting. If enacted, this would raise the price of monthly transit passes every other year beginning July 1, 2016.
Masui said the fare change proposal has not been officially put in place, but Regional Transit is holding open house events during the month of February to weigh customers’ opinions on potential price increases.
“We are encouraging people to provide feedback via email,” Masui said. “We’re in the 30-day open commentary period.”
A 5-year contract between Los Rios and Regional Transit allows students to pay half price for a monthly pass, according to City College public information officer Rick Brewer. This was a response to a previous 10-year contract that would have ended November 2016.
The current price for a monthly pass is $100, but students pay $50 per month under the 5-year contract. If the Fare Change Proposal is accepted, students would pay $60 for a monthly pass that costs $120 elsewhere.
Students who are taking four or more units may use a Universal Transit Pass (UTP) instead of a monthly pass. This is a sticker that can be added to a Los Rios Student ID and costs a one-time payment of $2.10 per unit. Brewer confirmed that the most a student will would have to pay for a UTP is the $31.50, the 15-unit price. The UTP will remain unaffected by the Fare Change Proposal.
Many City College students take advantage of discounted transit prices, including Jesus Barraza, computer engineering major. Barraza takes classes at C.K. McClatchy High School in addition to six units at City College. He paid $12.60 for a UTP.

Barraza said that even if the fare change proposal affected him, he would still use Regional Transit to get to his classes instead of driving.
“Even if prices rise, it helps make less traffic and it’s better for the environment,” Barraza said.
Since students won’t have to deal with any Regional Transit price increases unless they take three units or less, Brewer suggested that students adjust their schedules to quality for a UTP.
“If you can take one more class, take it,” Brewer said.
Regional Transit will host its next open house Feb. 16 at noon in the RT Auditorium. It will recommend the fare change proposal again March 14 to its board, according to Masui.
