Diablo Valley Vikings beat Panthers in a close game
City College softball dropped its third straight Big 8 Conference game March 10 against the Diablo Valley Vikings, 9-7.
Both teams came into the game ranked in the top 15 in the California Community College Athletic Association, with the 11th-ranked Vikings just one spot ahead of the 12th-ranked Panthers.
Despite having 13 hits on the day, the Panthers couldn’t rally back from the five-point lead that the Vikings held in the fifth.
“We’re just not pitching well enough,” said head coach Tim Kiernan. “We get ahead in the count, and then we throw a hitters pitch. On that home run, we had one ball, two strikes. Then we throw it up and away, and she tomahawks it out.”
The aforementioned home run was the turning point in the game. The Panthers led 4-2 going into the top of the fourth and were close to quickly closing out the inning before Vikings’ Carrie Lee reached base on a single. Lee scored on a fielding error two batters later and cut the lead to 4-3.
Two batters later, the bases were loaded, and Cynthia Duenas hit a grand slam just over the fence and glove of Panthers’ right fielder Riley Ammaturo.
“[Ammaturo] made a good attempt on it, but it was hit out,” said Kiernan. “And that’s probably the shortest part of the park right there.”

The Panthers fought back in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and one runner on base, first baseman Erikka Burke hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to 9-6. Two batters later, shortstop Emily Murphy brought in the last run of the game on a RBI single.
Burke went 2-3 at the plate, including one home run and three RBIs. Abi Lund (2) and Aaliyah Oliver (1) also had RBIs on the day.
“It’s one game at a time,” said Kiernan. “That’s how we play. [Diablo Valley] came in here 12-2. I think we played pretty good, and we made some mistakes and could’ve won the game, but we didn’t.”
The Panthers are scheduled to play five consecutive home games including their next set, a double header March 14 against Modesto Junior College.
