City College commemorated Mexican and Central American Independence Day on Sept. 20 by inviting mariachi band, Mariachi Los Gallos to play in the Quad.
The Mexican and Central American Independence Day commemoration was put together by the M.E.Ch.A club, Puente and the Cultural Awareness Center.
The Quad was crowded with students as the band sang traditional mariachi music that had some students dancing in front of the stage.
Pearl Estrada, a City College student, said that Mariachi Los Gallos was one of her favorite bands.
“Mariachi Los Gallos are great,” Estrada said. “I have seen them perform many times before. I really love their music and they are one of my favorite bands.”
Estrada also said that listening to them made her think of her childhood.
“It reminds me of my roots,” said Estrada. “It also makes me remember all the good times I spent with my grandmother growing up.”
Zhaniqua Relifod, vice president of the M.E.Ch.A club said that she was pleased with the positive reactions of the students toward the band, which played during the noon hour.
“I think that today went well,” said Relifod. “Students of all cultures seemed to enjoy themselves.”
Relifod said that the M.E.Ch.A club will be sponsoring more cultural events on campus in the near future.
“There will be more upcoming events,” said Relifod. “Also we will be doing something for Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead in English.”
