The City College baseball team was able to hold off a late run by the Modesto Junior College Pirates on April 16. The Panthers scored the first eight runs of the game, but were forced to hold off the late five -run offensive surge of the Pirates to make the final score 8-5, in favor of City College.
Modesto pitcher Matt Jackson had a 3.38 ERA coming into the game, and faced the 4.32 ERA of Panthers pitcher Brian Kennedy as his pitching opposition.
“He’s [Kennedy] a gamer who’s going to throw ‘K’s’ for us,” Panthers infielder Mike Correa said post game. “He’s a bulldog, he might be only 5′, 3″ but he pitches like he’s 6′, 7″.”
The bottom of the third inning was when scoring began for City College. Panthers third baseman Ryan Pudwell’s RBI single keep the inning going long enough for Panthers catcher Joe Setum to reach base, making the score 3-0 for the Panthers after a Pirates’ throwing error allowed another run to score.
The top of the fourth inning was the time that the Panthers defense supported their pitcher by making much needed defensive plays according to Correa.
“As long as our pitcher keeps the ball down we’ll go get it,” Correa said. “That’s been our thing all year.”
The Pirates allowed three runs on walks with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 6-0, something that Pudwell believes was directly related to the Panthers getting in Jackson’s head while he was on the pitching mound.

Pudwell hit another RBI single in the sixth to help push the score to 8-0 in favor of the Panthers by the end of the inning. The top of the seventh inning was the first bit of offense for the Pirates.
A two-run home run by the Pirates was the end of the day for Panthers’ pitcher Kennedy, but Correa said that the change in pitching was due more to the pitch count than a problem with the pitches being thrown.
Kennedy left the game giving up only two earned runs, Panthers pitcher Ben Brooks came into the game for relief pitching. A two-RBI double by the Pirates put the score at 8-4 in favor of the Panthers after seven innings.
“We took a deep breath and slowed it down,” Correa said in regards to overcoming the seventh inning run by the Pirates. “The pitching handled the adversity really well.”
A few singles in the eighth inning from the Pirates brought the score to 8-5 in favor of the Panthers, where the score remained until the final out. Although the Pirates made a run in the late innings of the game, Pudwell never believed that Modesto was back in the game.
“They weren’t back in it,” Pudwell said. “They [Modesto] had a couple good swings at the right times, that’s all.”
Both teams are now 17-14 overall, the next game for the Panthers is at Modesto Junior
College on April 23.
