Yvette Osumah, Emma Snuggs and Lisa Saeturn may seem like any other students planning to transfer to four year-colleges next year, but the three share something distinguishing them and guaranteeing acceptance at any college of their choice: They belong to honors club, Phi Theta Kappa, and attend honors classes.
“When you participate in some of the leadership and service activities on campus, that gives you things to write about in your resume,” says honors program coordinator Anna Joy.
“A couple of semesters ago we had a student receive a full scholarship to Berkeley because of his active participation in honors … honors gives you the tools to make yourself look different from everyone else when you apply.”
Political science major Lisa Saeturn says she agrees with Joy, and that those were her main reasons for participating in honors classes and Honors Club.
“I chose to partake in the honors program at Sacramento City College, which will hopefully show the admissions directors’ at these universities [Columbia, New York University, and Berkeley] that not only can I earn good grades, I can earn good grades in challenging and diverse social settings”, says Saeturn.

“UCLA did recommend taking five honors classes during your two years at community college because you stand out more in your application,” says former City College student and UC Berkeley alumna Yvette Osumah.

Phi Theta Kappa ethnic studies major Emma Snuggs says she benefits immensely from her membership.
“Phi Theta Kappa has a good name: motivated and positive students, volunteers in the community, high GPA and perfect candidates for many schools,” says Snuggs.
“So far I have received emails from University of Idaho, University of Tampa, Columbia University, and Cornell, and all emails say that I’d be a perfect addition to their student body because I’m a Phi Theta Kappa member.”
“I definitely recomend taking honors classes and its activities”, says counsler Juan LaChica.
