City College students can learn about Chicano and Latino heritage through different speakers and artists, listen to mariachi music in the Quad and have a chance to speak with health agencies Sept. 13 and Sept. 15.
“It is important that we come together and celebrate each others events, each others heritage [and] each others fiestas,” said David Rasul, dean of counseling and transitions.
As part of Her Stories, Ruby Chacon and Veronica Perez from Salt Lake City, Utah, will guide participants Tuesday 10 – 11:30 a.m. through a visual art journey in the Cultural Awareness Center.
Following the two speakers at noon -2 p.m., Latino Behavioral Health Week in the Cultural Awareness Center will feature six tables of health professionals with health information and resources for participants as part of the annual Chicano, Latino and Native American student welcome.
Rasul spoke about the different events offering students a place were “we can gather and speak about issues, speak about friendship, look to ourselves as a community outside of this campus.”

On Thursday, in remembrance of Mexican Independence Day (Sept. 16) and Central America Independence Day (Sept. 15), Los Gallos mariachi band will play in the Quad.
Thursday will also have guest speaker Sonia Nazario, a Pulitzer-Prize winning reporter of 20 years whose stories have included issues of hunger, drug addiction and immigration at 10:30 – 11:45 a.m. in the Cultural Awareness Center.
“We want our students to feel comfortable here on campus,” Rasul said about celebrating different heritages. “We don’t want them to feel alienated.”
