From helping the community with service projects to having access to various scholarships, Phi Theta Kappa and the City College Honors Club are two unique organizations that will hold upcoming orientations March 15 and 16 for students interested in joining their ranks.
Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society that recognizes high achievers through honors and allows students to help their community and college campus. Students involved have access to scholarships, leadership programs and online programs, according to English Professor, Anna Joy, adviser for Phi Theta Kappa.
“There’s at least a million dollars set aside for scholarships that are offered through the society itself,” Joy said.
There is a $55 membership fee that can be waived if a student qualifies for financial aid. Phi Theta Kappa candidates need to be enrolled in 12 transferable units at City College and maintain a 3.5 GPA, Joy said.
“It’s a way for students to get access to money,” Joy said.
Unlike Phi Theta Kappa, Honors club requires no minimum GPA. The campus club is primarily focused on motivating students to provide community service and utilizing the spirit of Phi Theta Kappa, according to Professor Nich Miller, the co-adviser for the Honors Club.
There are no qualifications to join the Honors Club, Miller said, and students benefit by supporting the community and being surrounded by other motivated involved individuals.
According to Miller both organizations work together to plan events and fundraisers connected to topics students are passionate about.

Phi Theta Kappa and the Honors Club took part in a Valentine’s Day fundraiser that raised $222 and all proceeds went to the City College Foundation Student emergency fund.
Phi Theta Kappa and Honors club blend in a few ways: Honors Club members are able to attend some designated Phi Theta Kappa conferences and help create the submitted projects at specific conferences, Miller said.
Phi Theta Kappa hosted a convention in 2010 for the Nevada/California region at the Clarion in downtown Sacramento focusing on the topic of “The Democratization of Information” Joy said.
“They both work well together,” Miller said. “We do Phi Theta Kappa business, but it’s largely about service projects and academic discussions.”
During the March 15 and 16 orientation, presenters will offer an overview of Phi Theta Kappa, honors classes and Honors Club, what they offer, how to become involved, how to enroll and the resources acquired upon enrollment, Miller said.
“It’s an organization that’s really dedicated to promoting students,” said Joy of Phi Theta Kappa.
