City College’s softball team rallied and prepared for its opening season game as the sunburst weather embraced Union Stadium. Feb. 12, the date the team has anticipated all semester has finally arrived.

Softball Head Coach Robert Maglione resides in his office an hour before the game begins as the team preps for the anticipated event.

The Panthers faced two teams Saturday back-to-back, winning both soundly.

“It’s very exciting to see where we are and for the [players] to get out of practice mode and play,” Maglione says. “It’s a big day for the team.”

The Redwoods Corsairs from College of Redwoods were up first against the Panthers, who flew into Union Stadium with loud rallies and jet-packed anthems.

The Panthers dominated the field with both defensive and offensive strategies.

Not 15 minutes into the game, the famous pitcher Cortney Allen managed to strike out most of the Corsairs batters, giving the Panthers an advantage.

The Panthers took the game with a winning score of 15-2.

According to Maglione, with the sunny weather working in their favor, the Panthers have had consecutive practices.

“This year’s team is a little further ahead than last year’s team,” Maglione says referring to the warm weather. “I’ve actually been able to give [the team] a couple days off.

After the final inning, the Panthers had a two hour break before their next game against, a shout out, against The Yuba College 49ers.

The game started with the Yuba 49ers in field batting away. It did not look good for the 49ers as the Panthers continually dominated the field catching all of their efforts. Once the Panthers were up, it seemed as if they were unstoppable by the end of the first inning against the 49ers with a score of 9-0.

With the game at its final end, the 49ers seemed to be out of fuel as the Panthers finished with a final score 15-0, making the season opening game a major success for the Panthers.
