The California State University Board of Trustees approved a two-step increase in college tuition, in early November, hoping to gather enough funds to cover the cost of enrollment, classes, and services for current students according to CSU’s Public Affairs. Although the increase is supposed to be for an adequate cause, this will affect current and prospective CSU students in a very negative way.
The objective is obvious. Yes, student resources and classes need to be paid for one way or another, but this is not something that should be thrown in the hands of students. The cost of college is already expensive enough as it is. It’s bad enough that enrollment fees were increased this semester. Between books, syllabus requirements, already existing fees, gas, parking, and more, college is a struggle for many students.
According to the new increase plan, on Jan. 1, 2011, the cost of tuition will increase by 5 percent, estimated at $105. The next step is for increase in tuition for the 2011-2012 school year, estimated at $444. Fees will increase by $516 for credential programs and $346 for graduate schools starting in the fall 2011.
Semester after semester, fees increase, yet financial aid does not. As important as education is in the present day, it is not being treated as a top priority. California’s state education budget is the same as it was five years ago. The only difference now is that there are 25,000 more students in school, according to CSU executive vice chancellor for business and finance in Public Affairs Dr. Benjamin F. Quillian.
This is something that the government and trustee boards should take into serious consideration.

According to Public Affairs, it is estimated that approximately 180,000 students will be covered by financial aid, but there are still tens of thousands of students who will not be granted assistance. So what happens to the student who are eager to learn, but simply cannot afford the price of today’s education?
Students are being left out to dry. No individual should be deprived of an opportunity to learn at the highest levels. The state of California should deduct some of the millions that it spends each year on things such as roads and bridges, and donate the funds to our educational program. For only 14 construction projects in California, up to $102 million, which would be a helpful boost to CSUs, will be spent on California’s construction in general.
Sometimes it seems as if society has forgotten what school and education is all about.
Educating the present generation is the means to a promising future for mankind. The success and outcome of approaching generations relies on what is being learned in today’s society – this is another reason why education should be at the top of everyone’s agenda. Rather than raising prices of tuition, an individual’s intellect should be raised. Education is the key to fighting hunger and poverty. It is the key to lowering crimes rates, and also leads to stress-free, healthier lifestyles.
The more a person knows, the more he or she can do.
