The week classes went remote throughout the Los Rios district colleges, Cristian Espinoza, an English major hoping to minor in Chicano Studies, got together with his group of colleagues through Facetime to stay connected with one another.
“We were painting, playing games and just enjoying each other’s company virtually,” explains Espinoza. “That is when this idea of creating a Zoom chat where anyone can join came to mind. I brought it up, and we all shared our ideas to make this happen.”
Although people can’t really socialize in person anymore, that hasn’t stopped students from socializing online. Espinoza and his colleagues, who are from the RASA/ASHE Center created the Creative Circle, an online video chat hosted through the Zoom app, which allows students to connect with each other.
The Creative Circle invites anyone who wants to join and socialize, while people paint, draw, color or play games.
“What we want people to get out of this experience from the Creative Circle is a relaxing time and a good time,” explains Espinoza. “But our biggest focus is for people to know that they have a community here at Sacramento City College that understands the frustration and confusion that comes with these sudden changes, and that they have a space to just have a good time and interact with people.”

“Apart from the Creative Circle, we have peer mentors from Puente, Umoja and RASA/ASHE overall that are on Zoom Monday through Thursday,” says Espinoza. “Students can schedule appointments with counselors and ask any questions, and if we are unable to help for any reason, we can more than 100% connect them to another resource on campus that can help them.”
Espinoza believes it is important for people to stay connected virtually to share information and resources, as well as have a good time on Zoom.
“Social distancing is important but it can also cause many of us to feel lonely,” said Espinoza. ”Here at the Creative Circle we will make sure no one feels alone through this pandemic.”
The Creative Circle is open to all City College students Friday from 6-7 p.m. on Zoom. To join the meeting, launch Zoom and use the meeting ID: 468-585-6866.
