After taking first place at both the United Spirit Association’s Regional Dance Championship and the International Hip-hop Dance Competition, City College’s Jazz and Hip-Hop dance teams performed as part of the Sacramento Kings pre-game show at Arco Arena, Monday, March 7.
Although the City College dance teams have never performed at such a large venue, both teams’ members said they felt they performed at their best and looked forward to doing more events for larger crowds.
Head coach and kinesiology professor Trinidad Stassi said that the dance teams auditioned for the chance to show their skills at Arco Arena in October 2010, but they only had a month to prepare their routines for the Kings game.
“It takes a lot of time and commitment,” Stassi said. “These girls are very loyal and have met their goals and objectives.”
Naomi Williams, a public relations major and member of the Jazz Dance Team, felt that despite the teams’ lack of time for preparation, their performance was flawless.
“I feel really great,” Williams said. “I think we set the bar really high. Hopefully, in the coming years we can keep progressing.”

Hip-Hop Team Captain Brianne Hannah said she did not feel nervous about the performance and was proud to be at center court with her team.
“I was more excited,” Hannah said. “I’ve never performed in such a large venue before, but it was great to be here with my girls.”
Jazz Dance Team member Jeannice McKinney said she had some concern before the performance. Once on the court, however, her anxiety subsided.
“At first I was really nervous, but when I got out there and heard the music, I just remembered to have fun and keep smiling,” McKinney said.
The dance teams performed routines that they do on campus and at half-time shows for City College games.
The dance team will hold dance training clinics and auditions for next semester’s dance team in April. Clinics will run April 1 and 8 from 3–5 p.m. Auditions for the teams will be held Friday, April 15, 3–5 p.m.
