City College’s Hughes Stadium, a venerable Sacramento sports landmark, has endured a long and storied history culminating with the current renovations taking place this spring and continuing through 2012.
The stadium has seen a lot since it first opened on Oct. 13, 1928. The 83-year-old monument, with a seating capacity of up to 23,000, has hosted all types of sporting events. Built primarily as a football stadium, it has largely remained so to this day. Still, athletes run across its track every day. Dive onto its grassy field, or run up its worn stairs in an effort to reach the sky.
Numerous musical acts have had their golden voices echo across the stadium. Pink Floyd played here. So did Linda Rondstadt.
Still, the golden age of Hughes Stadium has passed.

The stadium, named after Charles C. Hughes, the first superintendent of the Sacramento City Unified School District, has been in dire need of renovations.
According to Robert Martinelli, vice president of administrative services at City College, football will be the sport most affected by the stadium renovation. The team will practice on the grassy south end of the stadium.
“[The] hope is to bring the stadium back into full operation in September [2012],” Martinelli said.
In its present form, Hughes Stadium is still, after dozens of championship football games, one world WBA welterweight title fight and the site of the 1995 NCAA Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, a work in progress.
