In 2007, “Machete” was just a fake little movie trailer that came along with the film “Grindhouse”, the super collaboration between directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. “Machete” caused a stir with its memorable catch phrase: “You’ve f**ked with the wrong Mexican” and fans everywhere wondered, why isn’t this a real movie?
Three years later, the little trailer that could became a full-length feature film and cult film fanatics everywhere are rejoicing.
Danny Trejo plays Machete, an illegal Mexican immigrant hired by Booth, a sleazy businessman (Jeff Fahey), to assassinate the racist Senator McLaughlin (Robert DeNiro) during his re-election campaign. Story goes as follows: Machete is hired for an assassination job but gets double-crossed during his attempt. Predictably, Machete then seeks revenge on all those that have wronged him and chaos ensues. Did I mention that Machete also used to be an ex-federale back in Mexico?
Just like the 2007 film “Planet Terror,” director Robert Rodriguez again pays homage to the cult film genre with “Machete,” a movie best described as a “Mexploitation film.”. The movie is filled with plenty of revenge, blood, women, unforgettable dialogue, and of course, really big knives. It is the ’70s exploitation film for movie nerds of today.
With a bizarre melting pot of a cast, the film stars Danny Trejo, Jeff Fahey, Robert DeNiro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson, and Steven Seagal. DeNiro, Seagal, and Cheech Marin all in the same movie? Surprisingly, it all happens to work.

The real MVP of the film is Danny Trejo, who might as well become the Mexican version of Shaft. He has a silent demeanor, but it works in his favor. Every line and every move he makes as Machete just reeks of all-around bad-ass attitude. Calling Trejo tough is an understatement because even with a glance, you know he means business and is someone that you wouldn’t want to mess with.
Another role that is worth mentioning is Michelle Rodriguez as Luz/Shé. In this film, Rodriguez shows that she’s every bit as tough as Machete and does it in a very convincing way.
The only damper of the film was Jessica Alba and Lindsay Lohan. Alba, as the immigrations officer as well as Machete’s love interest, was very bland, blank eyed, and at times, a little unintentionally silly. Lohan had a very promising role (druggie socialite turned nun with a thing for guns.) but unfortunately her character didn’t seem fully developed and came off as fully irrelevant.
All in all, “Machete” is outrageously campy and not meant to be taken seriously. It’s a B-list movie living in an A-list world.
